Small and pretty, Derry offers visitors a welcoming and manageable place to appreciate Northern Ireland’s intriguing history — and most of its sights can be covered easily on foot. Now a worthy tourist destination with the best city walls in Ireland, during the 20th century, sectarian struggles plagued Derry. When Ireland was divvied up between the North and the Republic in the early s, Derry’s waterway — the River Foyle — was a logical border. But, for sentimental and economic reasons, the Protestant North kept all of this predominantly Catholic Nationalist city. Subsequently, the two sides have fought over its status. Even its name has been a source of dispute. It’s “Derry” to the Catholics and “Londonderry” to the Protestants. I once asked a Northern Ireland rail employee for a ticket to Derry; he replied that there was no such place. Still, I call it “Derry” since that’s what most of the city’s inhabitants do. The priest said that her mortal soul would be at risk if she crossed the threshold of a Protestant church and he forbade her from attending. On the big day, she stood in the cold with the church door open and watched from outside.
In later years, she told how hurtful it had been, and how it tainted her relationship with Catholicism. Still, the friendship survived. This anonymous story from the s is one of hundreds that are being gathered for a major folklore and oral history project that is being carried out by Dr Deirdre Nuttall for the National Folklore Collection in UCD. Faith is just one of the various aspects that make Protestants distinctive, she says.

Christianity was probably known in Ireland before the missionary activities of Patrick, the patron saint of the country, in the late 5th century. As the early church developed it was monastic, without parochial or diocesan divisions or central government. The early Irish Church was independent of Rome and proudly clung to its own usages in preference to those adopted by the rest of Christendom. The Norse invasions in the late 8th century, however, caused a decay in culture and learning in Ireland.
The weakness of an uncoordinated ecclesiastical organization became evident, and the Roman Church, through the see of Canterbury in England, began influencing the Irish. Obedience to Rome was finally accepted by the Irish Church in the 12th century. The native liturgies were abandoned, and the liturgy of the English Church was adopted.

Battle of the Boyne is a public holiday in Northern Ireland, where it is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed. Geared up in a black suit and bowler hat for a march to remember the Battle of the Boyne. In many towns in Northern Ireland, marches or walks are held by organizations with a Protestant orientation. Many marches are organized by Lodges of the Orange Order and are accompanied by a marching band. Participants in the walks, or marches, often wear dark suits, although they may remove their jackets if it is hot.
Traditionally, they also wore black bowler hats and white gloves, although these are not as common now.
